Meet The Bag Lady

Meet The Bag LadyI have been a fine artist since I could hold a pencil and majored in it in school. Primarily I am an oil painter but I also work in watercolor, acrylics and clay. I love the smell of turpentine and the buttery feel of new oil paints, fresh from the tube (heaven!). I get great satisfaction of rubbing my painty hands on my smock that I have been wearing since I was seven. With a fine arts background and a studio full of fine art supplies, I thought I had no need for glue sticks and patterned papers. I could not grasp how someone could spend hours in a craft store shopping. No smells. No mess. No fuss. Where is the thrill in that? Ignorant, I know.

I accepted this to be truth until my first son was born. My cousin Linda handed me my first scrapbook that she herself had started for me. From the instant that book hit my fingertips the obsession started. Now don’t get me wrong, I still covet the smell of turpentine and putting a brush to the board, but there is something about creating artful memories that I cannot seem to get enough of. And who cannot look at a small tube of glitter and not get giddy over its frosty goodness? I am an artist who now can spend hours in a fine art store and a craft store and break the bank equally in both places (my husband does not share in this excitement). No matter what skeptics say scrapbooking is indeed an art. And I should know. I am also a full time middle school art teacher.

I think it is important to know whom you are purchasing things from so here are some random bits about me so you get to know your teacher a bit better. I am…

  • A mother of two boys, a wife and a Middle School Art teacher (yes I am earning my wings!).

  • I love using color. My favorite is red. Blue is a close second.

  • I am a scrapper who does not eat while working.

  • I have a shoe obsession. You can NEVER have too many (no matter what my husband says). I think the count is up to 50 pairs.

  • My purse easily weighs 8 lbs. and contains random medical remedies, such as Immodium. Hey – I live in a house of men. What do you expect?

  • I have a phobia of fish – don't ask!

  • I love to dance even if it looks spasmodic.

  • I am a terrible liar so I don't even try.

  • I straighten my curly hair, which is red. As a child I wanted to dye it black.

  • It has to be chocolate. Period. No exceptions.

  • I am addicted to Grey's Anatomy and House Hunters.

  • Did you say a margarita on the rocks with lots of salt and fresh guacamole? I am there!

  • I use movie quotes on almost a daily basis.

  • In high school I had a haircut like Molly Ringwald in Breakfast Club. Yikes.

Meet Justine, Web Extraordinaire

Meet Justine, Web ExtraordinaireIt's a family affair. Despite sharing my childhood bedroom with my *older* sister -- AKA, The Bag Lady -- for more than a decade, I am actually willing to work with her. She is, after all, the one who turned me on to scrapbooking in the first place.

As a graphic design/layout artist, I keep my computer next to me at all times. At work, I ran the Production department at a small publishing company, which ranged from laying out books to designing brochures to creating web pages and e-mail promotions. Post-kids, I am still at the same company, but now I work on new product development, currently producing self-study training programs.

Since leaving the hands-on creative aspect of my job, it's refreshing to fulfill that outlet with scrapbooking, although it's admittedly a bit of a transition for me. While layout is second-nature (I'll oftentimes lay out a page on my computer before committing to the physical page), I come from a marketing world where "less is more" (i.e., be sure your message is obvious to the purchaser and don't muddy it up with "extras"). The first time I sat down and worked on a page, I had no idea what to do with the embellishments! It's been a fun learning process, though, I must say.

Here are some more tidbits about me...

  • I hardly ever cook; I never know what to make. But I love to host dinner parties and cook up gourmet spreads that take me days to prepare. Go figure.

  • I'm addicted to sugar…pixie stix have always been a favorite. As a child, I ate iced tea mix straight out of the container.

  • I am completely phobic of snakes. There were many years when I called them "strings" so I didn't have to even hear the word.

  • I have been surrounded by the name, Justin, throughout my life...

    • Despite having the "e" at the end of my name, I spent the first week of school every year telling my teachers I was Justine, not Justin. (I even have an uncle who calls me Justin!)
    • I met my husband, Justin, (yes, we are Justine and Justin) through a mutual friend, also named Justin.
    • We were married on the beach in Maui; it was the two of us with a minister and our photographer (named Justin).
  • I have moved 4 times in the last 5 1/2 years. Even though I swore I was staying put after buying my current house, I'd love to move again.

  • I love watching movies and tv shows that make me cry, which is a pretty easy thing to make me do. Ironically, I hardly ever cry in life.

  • I never leave the house without my hair brushed and make-up on. I'm not a roll-out-of-bed-and-go type of girl.

  • My favorite musician is Dave Matthews. Something about his voice puts me right at ease. I had his music playing on my iPod during my entire labor with my second son.
